Also, if you have room to cover it, we are throwing a social mixer after the conference featuring some of the same speakers as judges for a business pitch competition. This will be the first in a series of events hosted by UT Business Incubation, my office. Here's the link. Let us know, and thanks again for the coverage: https://www.facebook.com/ev...

Re: Disconnected – Businesses and smart phone users

One of my LinkedIn connections suggested that The Blade's sales force should take control of the situation by selling the QR Codes as a service and offer The Blade's expertise to our customers. We do. However, some agencies/customers create QR Codes that fail or point to content that is not mobile-friendly. We have no chance to screen them before publishing. I am hoping to draw attention to this problem and offer The Blade's expertise to our customers and prospects. A QR Code is a great way to add video, smart phone directions, text marketing campaigns, and more.

I am very concerned that prospects and customers might try them in another publication, or slip them into an ad printed in The Blade. Then, if that QR Code fails then the client abandons this valuable marketing tool that will position them to better communicate with their target market.

Re: U. Loved the picture of Herman Cain and his Follow Me on his bus. QR Codes will boom in 2012. I'm committed to helping people create qr codes with different functions @ http://www.rapidqrcodes.com. I'm looking forward to big year as people are creating a lot of qr codes. I'm curious if the Herman Cain Qr Code was one of Our Donation Qr Codes. That would be awesome.

Re: Mobile App Usage Begins to Far Outpace the Web Thanks to Facebook

I'm really happy that you like it, Andrew. I'll be looking forward to seeing your designs.

I had wondered about security, as well. However, our print publications have QR Codes that our journalists use to link to videos, audios, and restaurant menus - media convergence. Check out this post http://paulhem.com/?p=74, which mentions that most people are scanning a newspaper, or magazine at home. They also scan packaging materials and in-store codes.

We are working with our advertising customers, and I'm sure they would like to have the option of some cool company logo codes! So, please keep me informed, Len.

Re: Are QR Codes passé?

Hi Paul,

Great post. One thing that I believe that's going to have a negative effect on QR codes (at least in the short term) is phishing. When someone scans a QR code they have no idea what they're scanning! I think they'll be a drop off on usage and then security measures will try to come into play.

In the meantime, I've been working on creating "customized" QR codes, which I think will not only add some interest to an otherwise drab black and white blotch, but will also create greater security in the minds of users since they'll know what company it's associated with. We'll see what happens.

Re: Are QR Codes passé?

Until near field communication kicks in... What could be better than simple, fast answers... now!

Re: Social media and Halloween – scary, but tasty

Paul - Great points. One of the things we should remember that communicating on social networks is not same as communicating through other media. Users expect responses very quickly and demand much more in the way of customer service

Re: QR Codes in newsprint need supervision

There are some other considerations for newsprint. Is that covered by your program/process? If not, then the code may fail. I may have buried my lede (newsroom spelling). The reason I'm posting is that some of our national accounts have ads where the QR Codes fail - some ads for their mobile apps on our Web site are failing, as well. The Blade needs to be involved.

An associate and I have been working on QR Codes for news stories and ads since October of last year - not bragging because other areas of the world have been using QR Codes for years. :)

Re: QR Codes in newsprint need supervision

some basic best practices that you need to follow.

#1 Mobile-optimized landing pages

#2 Value exchange with the consumer for scanning (mobile coupon, discount offer, unique content, etc)

#3 Use a QR code campaign management tool to create, manage and track usage (to improve the user experience!)

The FREE QR code campaign management and point-&-click mobile web page builder at http://www.linkblots.com does all this and more – you should check it out if you are looking for a no-risk way to enter the QR code and mobile web space as a business.
